Wellington's tourism chief says the more than $500 million spent on the Hobbit movie trilogy can only have a positive effect on the capital's economy.
Through to the end of March, the cost of making the movies was $676 million and is expected to rise with post-production costs.
Filming of the third instalment of the Hobbit trilogy finished in Wellington in July, ending 14 years of Tolkien movie-making for Sir Peter Jackson.
Positively Wellington Tourism chief executive David Perks says the trilogy has been great for the capital, and he expects the economic spinoffs to continue.
The cruise ship season begins this week and Mr Perks expects that will increase interest in Hobbit-related activities.
