Group criticises fracking consultation timeframe

An environmental group says the timeframe for consultation on government guidelines for oil and gas development is outrageous.

The Environment Ministry's guidelines include a draft protocol for managing the effects of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.

A spokesperson for Climate Justice Taranaki, Emily Bailey, says the 1 November end to consultation gives newly-elected councils just two weeks to canvass their communities and make a submission.

She also says it makes no sense to hold the consultation before the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment issues a major report on the mining method.
