A butterfly bounty, organised by the Department of Conservation to rid the Nelson Tasman region of the great white butterfly, has been hailed a great success.
Schoolchildren and interested adults have netted 134 butterflies during the school holidays, earning themselves a $10 bounty for each one.
The department offered the reward as part of its intensive campaign to knock back a great white butterfly breeding surge during spring in and around Nelson and Richmond.
The butterfly is a pest and poses a significant threat to brassica crops throughout the country if it is allowed to spread.
