Authorities keeping an eye on Lake Wanaka and Wakatipu

The authorities in Otago are keeping a close eye on lakes Wanaka and Wakatipu as heavy rain and snowfalls risk pushing them into flood.

Environmental data officer with the Otago regional council Nineva Vaitupu, says Lake Wakatipu is already very high and Lake Wanaka is rising, due to the rain in the past week.

He says Lake Wakatipu isn't expected to spill into Queenstown on Sunday , but some low lying areas around Wakatipu may be inundated.

Mr Vaitupu says the rain in the area has been replaced with snow, but more heavy rain is due on Wednesday.

He says the lakes are expected to peak in overnight and as long as there is no more heavy bursts of rain they shouldn't flood.
