Companies admit damaging archaeological site

A construction company and a consultancy have pleaded guilty to damaging an archaeological site in Tauranga.

The Historic Places Trust says Neil Construction Ltd and S&L Consultants Ltd were convicted and discharged on the basis both donate $7500 to it.

The trust says earthworks at a site owned by Neil Construction in March this year damaged eight archaeological features relating to a pre-European Maori settlement.

The trust says the defendants made a basic and careless mistake by not checking an archaeological authority was in place.
