Dunedin companies fined over worker injuries

Two Dunedin companies have been fined for worker injuries.

Scrap metal firm Everitt Enterprises and rolled oats manufacturer Harraway and Sons were sentenced at the Dunedin District Court on Friday.

Everitt Enterprises was fined $40,000 and ordered to pay reparations of $10,500 to a worker who fell after slipping on an unsecured extension ladder covered in printing ink.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment says the company will only pay $30,000 of the $40,000 fine because of its financial circumstances.

In the other case, Harraway and Sons was fined $22,500 and ordered to pay $12,500 in reparations to a worker who lost the tips of two fingers in a machine in January this year.

The ministry says simple safety steps would have prevented the injuries in both cases.
