A woman wept silently as she was sentenced in the Wellington District Court on Tuesday for mistreating her three-year-old daughter.

Terri Pickering, 25, admitted a charge that arose from a 10-day delay in taking her child to hospital.

In sentencing the Wairarapa woman to two years and three months in jail, Judge Denys Barry said when the girl arrived in hospital she had clearly visible broken bones and a large infected hole in her leg.

Judge Barry says medical experts said the break had happened 10 days before.

The judge took into account Pickering's guilty plea, her social isolation and remorse, and reduced her sentence by 15 months.
