Old Waikato mine to be recycled as a dump

Resource consents have been granted for a new landfill on the site of an old coal mine at Glen Afton in north Waikato.

The landfill will cover a 20-hectare site and has capacity for eight million cubic metres of waste.

Independent commissioners have decided any adverse effects from the landfill will be minor if the operators comply with consent conditions.

They have imposed a range of conditions to cover any environmental impacts, which include measures to control gas and odours.

The land is already the site of a construction and demolition waste landfill and an active coal mine.

Before construction of the landfill can begin an investigation of coal-mine tunnels in the area will need to be carried out.
