A contractor in Tauranga has been fined more than $16,000 for illegally disposing of and burning asbestos.

Contour Ltd and owner Stephen Mark Miller were prosecuted by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council in January.

Miller was asked to demolish several structures from a Bellevue property, including a workshop, fence and a garage clad with cement board, which he did so by burning and burying on his own property.

A regional council officer discovered the asbestos waste at his Te Puna home following a complaint and an investigation.

Miller admitted he had not worked with asbestos before, but he was aware there were special requirements for disposing waste. He was ordered to pay $16,400.
