Christchurch burglary warning for the warmer weather

5:03 pm on 9 December 2013

Residents in Christchurch are being warned to keep their homes secure during the warmer weather, following a number of burglaries in the area.

Detective senior sergeant Corrie Parnell says five burglaries were recorded during the weekend at New Brighton and Burwood properties where doors and windows had been left open.

He says while most burglaries involve forced entry through windows and doors, police are starting to see more incidents at insecure premises.

Mr Parnell says there's a temptation to leave doors and windows open in warmer weather, but residents need to remember this leaves their homes vulnerable to burglars.

He says when heading out to the backyard, people should take a minute to lock doors and secure windows, and do the same at night when they go to bed.
