The Met Service is warning of possible severe thunderstorms tonight in Gisborne and Hawke's Bay.
It says the storms could produce downpours of up to 40 millimeters an hour, as well as hail in excess of 20 millimeters in diameter.
Such intense rainfall could cause flooding, while large hail could significantly damage crops, orchards, vines, glasshouses and vehicles, it says.
The storms are expected to ease later on Tuesday night.
