State Highway 1 at Dromore in South Canterbury has reopened after a spate of fires close to the road.
The highway was closed to traffic on Monday afternoon as crews dealt with paddock and grass fires.
Trains on the main south line, which runs parallel to the highway, were also stopped as a safety measure but are now running again.
It is not known how the fires started.
