A woman has drowned while swimming at Rabbit Island, west of Nelson.
Adelheid Wilma Stock, 71 from Nelson, had been pulled from the water unconscious at about 5pm Sunday.
She had been swimming with a friend at the time.
Police say Ms Stock died at the scene, despite the efforts of the emergency services and the public.
Police are thanking members of the public first on scene, who pulled the woman from the water and began CPR.
