1600+ claims filed since quake

The Earthquake Commission has received more than 1600 claims relating to an earthquake which rocked the lower North Island last Monday.

The quake measured 6.2 on the Richter scale and was centred 15km east of Eketahuna in north Wairarapa.

Civil Defence says large cracks in some roads near Mauriceville will take some time to fix but most damage to infrastructure has already been repaired.

Wairarapa controller Kevin Tunnell said people reacted well to the quake - even those who had to abandon their flats after an apartment building in Masterton was condemned.
