Auckland youthtown centre temporarily shut

12:50 pm on 29 January 2014

The Auckland youthtown centre will be temporarily shut after elevated levels of lead were detected as a result of a old rifle range in the building.

The lead was first detected in the basement of the Nelson street building in 2012.

Despite sealing the basement off and putting it through a cleaning programme, Youthtown says recent testing revealed elevated levels of the metal.

Chief executive Paula Kearns says there have been no reports of people falling ill because of it, but the building will remain shut until at least June while the problem's addressed.

Youthtown will operate from a premises in Freeman's Bay in the meantime.
