The Transport Agency is consulting the public over a planned link road between Petone and Grenada, north of Wellington.

It says the public will be closely involved in the project's development if it gets through to the consent stages.

Residents in the Takapu Valley, which is one of the options for part of the route, are critical of the proposal, saying it will destroy the rural community.

If the link is approved, the hope is congestion will be reduced on both State Highways One and Two.

Construction could start in four or five years and be finished in 2024 if funding and consents are granted.

Consultation is due to take six weeks and the Transport Agency says the public will be closely involved in the project's development if it gets through to the consent stages.
