Police say a 23-year-old man assaulted at a Mount Eden home on Saturday night is still in a critical condition with head injuries in Auckland Hospital and has his family at his side.
Detective Inspector Chris Cahill said on Sunday that shortly before the assault the victim and his brother had been at Eden Park, where the Nines rugby league tournament is being held this weekend.
Mr Cahill said the assault happened at about 8.10pm during a party at a Bellwood Avenue address.
Police have spoken to nearby residents and party goers and are still trying to piece together what happened.
