Melling Station clear of asbestos

11:07 am on 18 February 2014

Melling Station building on Wellington's Hutt Valley commuter train line will reopen today, after being cleared of asbestos dust.

The building was closed in December when tests found evidence of the toxic dust.

Greater Wellington Regional Council, owner of the building, says it has been thoroughly cleaned and tests show no signs of asbestos.

The dust was also found at a signal box at Taita Station and some parts of the Upper Hutt, Trentham and Woburn station buildings.

The signal box at Taita is again being used after thorough cleaning, and the council says affected areas at the other stations are being dealt with.
