The Local Government Commission has recommended a unitary authority for the region, replacing the current four councils.

The Whangarei District Council is against the plan on the grounds that there are no convincing reasons for change, and most people don't want it.

The Far North Mayor John Carter, says his council's opposed because the authority would be based in Whangarei.

He's encouraging people to tell the Commission their views on a unitary authority before submissions close on Friday.

The proposal will need support from residents to succeed, and a majority in favour, if it comes to a poll.
