Dunedin police do not know who a woman found dead on St Clair beach is.
Part of the city's most popular beach was cordoned off on Wednesday morning after the elderly woman was discovered by a walker at 6am.
Police said the woman's death does not appear suspicious, meaning she most likely died from an accident or medical event.
They have spent the day unsuccessfully trying to identify her. A post-mortem will be carried out on Wednesday evening.
