Queenstown Airport is to spend millions of dollars soundproofing 150 houses close to the runway as it seeks to triple the number of passenger jets flying into the resort.
Airport corporation chief executive Scott Patterson says it had taken six years to consult local residents, who will now be offered double-glazing and soundproof gib board to block out the noise, at a cost to the company of more than $2 million.
The airport will pay 75 percent of the costs and the owners will pick up the rest.
Mr Patterson says the scheme will enable sensitive neighbours to live near the fastest-growing airport in the country.
The Frankton Residents Association says many like living close to the airport and will accept the offer.
