Power out for hundreds in Auckland

4:09 pm on 7 March 2014

Heavy traffic has been building at central Auckland intersections since an accident cut power to part of the central business district on Friday afternoon.

Vector said a contractor hit a cable, disconnecting about 1400 houses and businesses in the Freemans Bay area about 2.30pm.

Police said major intersections near the central motorway junction are clogged, but officers are directing traffic and no crashes have been reported.

Vector said generators are powering traffic lights at the busiest intersections and it hoped to have power restored by about 5pm.
