Baby's injuries 'among worst seen' by police

Police in Central Hawke's Bay say injuries sustained by a baby are among the worst they have ever seen.

The five-week-old boy suffered a serious head injury and other multiple injuries including fractures in an incident last November. He was taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital and immediately transferred to Starship Hospital in Auckland.

He was discharged after about six weeks' treatment and is now in the care of Child Youth and Family.

A 20-year-old Waipukurau man has appeared in court on Thursday charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and neglect of the boy. He was remanded on bail to reappear on 14 April.
