More time to nominate for Tuhoronuku

9:22 pm on 31 March 2014

Ngapuhi people now have another two weeks to nominate hapu representatives for the iwi's mandated authority.

Tuhoronuku, the board that will lead negotiations with the Crown for the Ngapuhi Treaty settlement, has reopened nominations for the 15 positions.

Nominations officially closed more than a week ago, but Tuhoronuku says some hapu have been waiting for the Crown to respond to Official Information Act requests to see the submissions on the mandate, before deciding if they'll take part in the elections.

Those documents will be released by the Crown on Monday, and to accommodate those hapu, Tuhoronuku is extending nominations until 17 April.

Willow-Jean Prime, a lawyer acting for Ngati Hine claimants, says re-opening nominations will not solve core problems with the mandate and the election process should be halted.

Ms Prime says the Crown is just about to release the 3500 submissions made on the mandate, six months after hapu asked to see them.

She says 63 percent of the submissions opposed the mandate and hapu who have refused to take part in the elections want to know why the Crown approved it.

Ms Prime says the Crown has said many objections were pro forma and two weeks is not enough to analyse the documents.

Nominations also open on Monday for four urban Maori representatives on Tuhoronuku, and for the two kuia and kaumatua seats.
