A handglider had to be rescued on Tuesday evening after crashing into the water at Whitewash Head near Sumner in Christchurch.
The ambulance service says a member of the public saw the the handglider crash and called them just before 6pm.
A lifeboat was sent out and pulled a 52-year-old man from the water. He was treated for mild hypothermia.
