Artificial surf reef to be removed

The $1.5 million artificial surf reef at Mount Maunganui, in Tauranga, is being removed.

The reef was installed in 2005, partly to provide a superior surf break for surfers.

It failed to win favour with surfers and the public, and surf lifesavers said it created dangerous rips.

The Bay of Plenty Regional Council said dismantling the reef would cost $60,000.
