The lawyer and former central Hawke's Bay mayor who gave legal advice to failed finance company Belgrave Finance has denied doing anything wrong.

Hugh Edward Staples Hamilton denies charges of theft by a person in a special relationship, making a false statement as a promoter and making a false statement to a trustee.

In his closing address at the High Court in Auckland on Wednesday, defence lawyer David Young said Mr Hamilton had no motive to do anything unlawful when he gave legal advice to Belgrave Finance.

The six-week trial is expected to end on Thursday.
