A man arrested over a kidnapping and assault has escaped police custody.

A 29-year-old woman was allegedly driven from the Auckland suburb of Glen Innes to the Coromandel on Monday evening, and repeatedly assaulted during the journey.
Brett Makiri was arrested in west Auckland on Wednesday afternoon, but about 6pm police put out a statement saying he escaped from the Central Police Station on Cook Street.
The 23-year-old was wearing a dark T-shirt, knee-length shorts and white shoes.
Police say it is possible he will ask members of the public for money or attempt to hitchhike a ride to his next destination.
They said anyone who sees Mr Makiri should call 111 immediately. He was due to appear in court on Thursday.
