A programme aimed at curbing youth unemployment is being piloted in Christchurch.

A not-for-profit organisation, WorkChoice said it has 300 students involved in the pilot of the Life After School scheme.

Chief executive Amanda Wheeler said the programme will focus on skills, as well as how young people can put themselves forward as employees.

Ms Wheeler said it will also offer tips on creating a CV and consider what employers look for in candidates and areas where there are skills shortages.

Statistics New Zealand said more than a third of all unemployed people are aged between 15 and 24.
