A team of engineers has been formed to tackle flood problems in the Waimakariri District after heavy rain last week.

Heavy rain on 7 and 8 June caused havoc across the region, flooding and closing roads and schools, and forcing the evacuation of a Rangiora rest home.

District mayor David Ayers said the team will look at short, medium and long term options to help with flooding in some of the worst hit areas.

He said the short term options, already being worked on, include changes of drain gradients in the Kaiapoi area.

A report on the works will be presented to the council in July.
