The act that marked New Zealand's entry into World War I is being commemorated by a new exhibition at Auckland Museum.
Entangled Islands looks at the legacy of 29 August 1914 when New Zealand troops seized Samoa from its German colonial rulers.
The consultant historian for the exhibition, Auckland University's Damon Salesa, says that single act transformed both societies.
If it had not happened, he said, New Zealand and Auckland would be very different places - and the All Blacks would be a very different team.
Today, about 140,000 Samoans live in New Zealand and Auckland is the world's biggest Samoan city.
