Thames shooting 'not random attack'

7:36 pm on 29 July 2014

Police say a home invasion in Thames that left two people with gunshot wounds was not a random attack and they have identified several people of interest.

A 73-year-old man and a girl aged 17 were at their home in Parawai Road on Monday evening when a vehicle pulled into the driveway.

Police said the man went outside to see who it was and was attacked by three men wearing balaclavas, who then searched the property.

Detective Sergeant Martyn Hughes said a male friend of the girl's turned up and both were wounded when a shotgun went off.

They needed surgery, but discharged themselves from hospital early on Tuesday morning. They have since been located and taken back to Waikato Hospital.

The 73-year-old was kept in Thames Hospital overnight, but has since been released.

Police said the intruders took off in a silver and dark-coloured flat deck ute.

Police have conducted a forensic examination at the house, searched another property and examined two vehicles.
