The police have arrested two people and are looking for a third, who may be armed, after a shooting in the Hutt Valley on Friday.

A 20-year-old man walked to Hutt Hospital after being shot through the hand by a bullet that also grazed his head.

Hutt Valley Area Commander Inspector Shane Cotter said the man was lured to the address where he was attacked. "He's lucky to be alive," he said. "He was obviously in a lot of pain."

The armed defenders squad was called out to the Harley Grove address in Lower Hutt where the shooting took place in the morning on Friday.

A 34-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man have been charged over the wounding.

The police want to speak to Charles Davis, an occupant of the address, who they say is known to carry weapons.

The gun used in the attack has yet to be located but is believed to be a pistol.
