Major facelift for Basin Reserve

9:32 pm on 22 August 2014

Wellington's Basin Reserve could undergo a major facelift with multi-million dollar floodlights and up to 6000 extra seats.

Limited overs' cricket games are currently played at Westpac Stadium.

A Wellington City Council spokesperson said the council, along with other stakeholders, was working on a proposal to install six LED floodlights at the Basin.

Wellington Cricket chief executive Peter Clinton welcomed the proposal.

"Well, we're very excited about the possibility of floodlights for the Basin of course. But there's still quite a discussion to have, and it's really a wider discussion around what do we need in Wellington in terms of our sports venues. That's the discussion that's going on at council level and we're feeding into that."

Mr Clinton said the Basin would need 3000 to 6000 extra temporary seats to host a floodlit international match.

Westpac Stadium chief executive Shane Harmon says he's confident any changes at the Basin won't affect his venue.
