Inquiry into fire burnoff death

5:42 pm on 5 September 2014

Police are investigating the death of a Central Otago man who lost his life while helping with a controlled burnoff at a farm near Cromwell.

Peter Grayland was part of a two-man team doing the burnoff on Northburn Station on Wednesday afternoon, but his male co-worker lost sight of him while the fire was in progress and contacted emergency services.

Mr Grayland's body was found at the scene about 6.30pm.

Police say WorkSafe New Zealand and the Rural Fire Service are helping with the investigation.

The farm's owners and Mr Grayland's family have declined interview requests from Radio New Zealand.
