Copies of more than one million emails sent through Auckland's mayoral office continue to be held by the consultants who conducted an inquiry into Len Brown's extra-marital affair.

Auckland Council said it expected the copies could be destroyed soon.

The electronic copies of emails to and from mayoral staff were taken by consultants EY, who the council called in after Mr Brown last year admitted an extra-marital affair.

The inquiry found no inappropriate spending of council money but that free or upgraded hotel rooms, used by the mayor's family, should have been declared.

The council said EY had held email copies longer than expected due to media requests for information contained in them.

It said all those requests had been met and EY's input was needed only once to supply information that could not be found within council records.
