The mound of soil that collapsed and almost suffocated a 12-year-old boy in Twizel yesterday is being fenced off today ahead of a possible Worksafe investigation.
The boy's father Craig Miller said his son, along with three friends, was digging into the side of the pile of soil on reserve land on Saturday morning when it collapsed.
Mackenzie District Council Chief Executive of Wayne Barnett said the soil was being stockpiled to be used as topsoil for land-scaping around the reserve.
He said the Council was running its own investigation into the accident and has asked contractors to fence off the site to preserve it ahead of any potential Worksafe investigation.
Mr Miller said when he pulled his son from the mound he was unconscious, but he started breathing again once his airways were cleared of dirt.
"Once the airways were cleared out he was back breathing by himself, and he kept on fighting, he hasn't stopped fighting yet."
Mr Miller said his son is still in the intensive care unit at Dunedin Hospital, in a stable condition and was expected to make a full recovery.
