Christ's College takes top heritage award

One of Christchurch's oldest schools has been named as the winner of the Canterbury Supreme Heritage award.

The awards, which were first made in 2010, recognise excellence in heritage retention and conservation.

Awards chairperson Anna Crighton said Christ's College beat about 100 other contestants to take out the Supreme Heritage Award for the restoration of the school's Julius and Harper Houses.

She said the building embodied the peak of the stonemason's craft, and the work done on earthquake strengthening and fire prevention services had been integrated seamlessly.

"The earthquake strengthening and improved fire services have been subtly integrated into the historic interior, so it looks exactly as it was when it was built," she said.
