Police in Napier are looking for a 31-year-old man in connection with a serious assault in which a man allegedly tried to drown a woman in the ocean.
They want to speak to Jason Taki-McLeod in relation to the incident last Friday night.
A police spokesperson said the 20-year-old woman was assaulted and a man tried to drown her in the sea off Marine Parade.
She was later taken to a local bar by a good samaritan who helped her.
Neither the victim nor Mr Taki-McLeod were from Napier, the spokesperson said.
Detective Sergeant Jason Crowe said it was a particularly nasty assault on a vulnerable victim and police were keen to find the person who was responsible.
