Council IT project millions over budget

A major upgrade of the Auckland Council's computer systems is running a year late and will run tens of millions of dollars over budget.

Councillors would be briefed behind closed doors, on the work aimed at merging the different IT systems inherited from the eight local bodies that were amalgamated four years ago.

The so-called New Core system had a budget of $70 million to merge and upgrade the systems, allowing public dealings with the council to be streamlined.

Council chief operating officer Dean Kimpton said is was a complex job, and none of which could be adopted as the main system for the new council.

Mr Kimpton said outside contractors were being added to the project, but the increased costs would be met from within existing budgets.
