The police dive squad has been called to McLaren Falls near Tauranga after a swimmer drowned.
Police said the person got into difficulty while swimming in deep water.
Emergency services were called at about 3.30pm after the swimmer's friends were unable to rescue the person.
They said the body had not yet been recovered.
