Crane boom topples metres from building

3:30 pm on 15 December 2014

The boom of a crane at the site of Blenheim's new theatre has toppled, landing just metres from the neighbouring Clubs of Marlborough building.

The 100-tonne mobile crane was sitting in the middle of the work site on the multimillion-dollar ASB Theatre when the boom appeared to fall backwards and landed on the riverbank today.

The boom was bent over the top of large concrete slabs, ready to be picked up by the crane and placed.

The managing director of Robinson Construction, Phil Robinson, said there was no load on the crane at the time and is hugely relieved that no one was hurt.

Work was continuing at the site as planned and another crane would brought in to lift the boom from the ground.

WorkSafe inspectors are investigating the incident.
