An eight-year-old girl is fighting for her life after being hit by a car in West Auckland.

Police said the girl was hit on Titirangi Road in New Lynn just after 9am this morning and received critical injuries.

The girl was on her way to the dairy and was not with the family at when she was struck, police said.

It appeared she had the green-man crossing signal at the lights when she was hit.

She was taken to Starship Hospital and her family are now by her side.

Police officers have been interviewing the driver of the car at the Waitakere Police Station and detectives and the Serious Crash Unit are investigating.

A spokesperson at Starship said the injured girl was in a critical but stable condition.
