A police officer has suffered injuries after being been hit by a car at a Hawke's Bay checkpoint where drivers were being breath-tested.

Police say a vehicle crossed over the centre line at the checkpoint near Clive, hitting the officer.

They say the vehicle drove off at speed and was found crashed more than 2 kilometres away.

Area Commander Inspector Tania Kura said says one person from the vehicle had been located. No arrests had been made.

She said the officer had grazing and gashes to his legs, face and arms and was hospitalised overnight.
