Bottles were thrown at firefighters last night as they tried to put out a tree set alight at Opotiki College, the Fire Service says.
A service spokesperson, Jarron Phillips, said the firefighters were forced to retreat to their truck.
No one was injured, and the fire was eventually put out.
Mr Phillips said three males were seen running from the college.
The police have been to the scene this morning.
