The police investigating a fatal attack on a man in the Wellington suburb of Tawa on Saturday night say some potential witnesses are holding back information.

Bruce Coker,49, was found lying unconscious in Rossiter Street, in the suburb of Linden, Tawa, just metres from a family party he had been attending.

He died in Wellington Hospital on Tuesday and his tangi was held on Takapūwāhia Marae at Porirua this morning.

Detective Senior Sergeant John van den Heuvel said Mr Coker's family and friends described him as a kind-hearted man without a bad bone in his body and it was apparent he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

He said up to 20 police officers and staff are working on the investigation and have spoken to many people who were in the area at the time.

Mr van den Heuvel said police believed some are holding back on being completely truthful.

He said some individuals may be unsure or even confused as to what is the right thing to do but they should think of Mr Coker's family.
