Search for teenager scaled back

3:15 pm on 29 December 2014

Police and volunteers have scaled back their search for a teenager who went missing while swimming at Ninety Mile Beach on Saturday.

The 16-year-old boy, who has not been named, was with a group at Hukatere when he was swept out to sea.

A full search-and-rescue operation involving helicopters, a fixed-wing plane and search parties on the water and along the shore has failed to find any sign of him, and he is presumed to have drowned.

Far North Surf Rescue chair Dave Ross said the search would carry on today but will be much smaller.
