A Gisborne man who died after falling from a lighting pole at a Gisborne property on New Year's Eve has been named as Ben Sargent.
Police said a New Year's Eve party was in progress when the 20-year-old climbed up a tennis court lighting pole on a family property and tried to jump into a swimming pool. However, he lost his balance and hit the edge of the pool.
Mr Sargent was taken to Gisborne Hospital in a critical condition but died of his injuries.
His death has been referred to the coroner.
