Police say the death of a teenage girl on the Coromandel Peninsula who was paddle-boarding came after a tragic set of circumstances.
Amie Louise Russell, who was 15 and from Morrinsville, has been named as the person who died at Whangamata Habour yesterday.
Police are helping the Waikato Regional Council to find more about what happened.
They said the board was forced under a moored yacht by strong winds after it was caught in a strong outgoing current.
Another person on the board jumped clear but Amie ended up under water for several minutes.
CPR was performed after she was pulled from the water by ambulance staff.
