Warning over intersection crash toll

4:53 pm on 13 January 2015

Motorists in Ashburton are being urged to slow down at intersections to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries.

The Ashburton District Council said between 2009 and 2013, there were 380 crashes at intersections in the district, with nine deaths and 35 serious injuries.

The council's asset management engineer, Geoff Rhodes, said intersection crashes made up just under half of the district's road crashes in the past five years, many of them occurring where land use changes from rural to lifestyle.

He said it might be tempting to pull into a gap but it was easy to misjudge the speed of oncoming traffic.
